Vermont Watercolor Artist
Originally from upstate New York, Jackie Mangione earned her BFA from Pratt Institute and, following graduation, was a freelance photographer working in photojournalism before moving to Vermont. While raising her family, she spent several years working as the office manager for Common Ground Center, a local summer camp that fosters the arts. Working at summer camp with other artists, she began exploring more ways to fit art into her work schedule and transitioned to painting and teaching year round. She chose watercolor painting after taking lessons from Vermont watercolor artists she met that had the same appreciation for nature that intrigued her, as well. “I had to unlearn many of the painting techniques I learned in oil and acrylic, but I was, and remain, intrigued at how many endless areas of technical skill watercolors can employ.”
Her paintings draw on strong combinations of color and value, while allowing the watercolor medium to guide her exploration of space. She explains, “I am aware and am in awe of nature’s way of blanketing the landscape with both chaos and solitude, as well as what is caused by human nature, versus just letting the natural world guide us.”
Jackie currently sells her artwork and handpainted silk scarves at the Waitsfield and Stowe Farmers' Markets. She also demonstrates and teaches art at Shelburne Craft School, Common Ground Center and Spruce Peak Ski Resort, as well as through private instruction. She received the Holbein Artist Award in 2013 for her painting, “Wasatch Mountains” at last year’s Green Mountain Watercolor Exhibit.
